『用美國小學課本學英文』

逛大潤發的時候發現的書，好奇之下翻了一下還蠻有趣的。
這本書例舉的美國小學教材包含社會、自然、數學、言語等等多方面，
英文的文法程度約略相當於我們的國中，但是所使用的字彙比高中還廣泛，
比起標準的英文教材，這本書中的小學課文內容有更好的社會和文化內涵。
下面列舉由一篇名為「Dream」的自然科學課文中的文句：

Some people have a natural tendency to recall their dreams with tremendous clarity.

have a natural tendency to ~ 天生傾向於~
with clarity 清晰地
某些人有種天生傾向，能夠清楚的記住他們所作過的夢。

When we first drift off to sleep, we enter a very light state of unconsciousness.

drift to sleep 『漂去睡』=漸漸的睡著
un不+conscious清醒的+ness名詞字尾=unconsciousness 無意識狀態
當我們開始漸漸的睡著的時候，會先進入一種輕微的無意識狀態。

Although our bodies are in a profound state of unconsciousness at this point, we are still not yet dreaming. It is not until stage five that dreaming begins.

profound 深層的
it is not until (時機) that~ 一直到(時機)才~
雖然我們的身體已經處於一種深層的無意識狀態，但夢境還沒開始。要一直到第五階段才會開始作夢。

There are many different levels of awareness in dreams. Some appear as just a hazy scene of vague images where we seem to be nothing more than an outside observer.

awareness意識，感知，體認(的動作本身)，consciousness雖然有「意識」的意思，但偏「清醒(的狀態)」
hazy(帶有霧氣而顯得)朦朧的，模糊的，用來形容遠景、記憶、概念。
vague(概念上)含糊的/曖昧的，(形狀上)模糊的，(心態上)茫然的。
在夢中有許多不同程次的感知狀態。有些是由曖昧的影像組成的朦朧場景，而我們自身只是這個場景的旁觀者。

At the other end of the spectrum is what is called lucid dreaming. In these dreams, the dreamer is fully aware that what he or she is seeing is a dream.

at the other end of the spectrum (直譯=在範圍的另一頭,spectrum為「光譜」或「範圍」、「領域」)意同on the other hand,另一方面來說。
lucid 頭腦清楚的，清晰的，明亮的。
相反的一個層次被稱為清晰夢境。在這些夢境裡，作夢的人完全知道自已正在作夢。

There is no doubt that the world of dreams is a boundless universe where we have no limitations or restrictions. If we pay attention to them, dreams can teach us much about ourselves and they can provide us with very useful insight or creative inspiration.

insight 深入的了解；洞察力
毫無疑問地，夢境是一個無止境的宇宙，讓我們在其中不受任何限制和規範。如果我們能夠留意這些夢境，它們可以教導我們更多關於自已的事物，並且提供我們相當實用的洞察力和創意來源。
